How to Get from Ciampino Airport to Rome?
Rome Ciampino Airport
Ciampino Airport (CIA) is the second-largest airport in Rome, after Fiumicino Airport, and is primarily used for low-cost flights. Its full name is Rome - Ciampino International Airport "G.B. Pastine", dedicated to the memory of an Italian pilot from World War I.
Inaugurated in 1916, it initially served exclusively as a military airport. In 1930, it opened to civilian traffic. Even today, a quarter of the airport's area is still reserved for military use. Until the opening of Fiumicino in 1961, Ciampino was the only airport in Rome.
The airport consists of a single terminal for both arrivals and departures.
How Far is Ciampino Airport from Rome City Centre?
Ciampino Airport is located in the southeast of Rome, near the city's ring road (Grande Raccordo Anulare), and is situated closer to the city centre than Fiumicino Airport.
The distance between the airport and Rome city centre (Termini Station) is approximately 15 km.
Ciampino Airport to Rome Transport Options
Transferring from Ciampino to the centre of Rome is quite easy, with options including shuttle buses (direct transport), bus+train combinations, bus+metro, taxis, private transfers, or rental cars.
1. Shuttle Bus
Shuttle buses provide direct transportation between Ciampino Airport and Termini Station, with the departure stop located in the square directly in front of the terminal.
They are the most comfortable option, offering a direct and fast transfer (taking 50-60 minutes to Termini, depending on traffic). There is dedicated storage space in the hold for your bags.
Ticket prices purchased online are often cheaper than those bought directly from the driver. Online tickets are typically valid for all of that company's departures on that specific day. It is recommended to arrive at the bus stop 15-20 minutes before departure.

Terravision Shuttle Bus
Terravision buses depart from Ciampino Airport (Platform 1), make one additional stop in the center of the town of Ciampino, and then head directly to Rome, stopping at Termini Station (Via Giolitti no. 32-34-36-38).
The ticket price for a Ciampino - Termini trip is:
- Adult: €7/ one way or €12/ round trip
- Children under 5: Free

2. Bus and Train/ Metro
Buses connect the airport to the Ciampino town railway station (where you can continue your journey to Termini or other train/metro stations) and to the Rome metro lines.
Buses are the most affordable transport option, but they are not the most comfortable or the fastest. The buses make frequent stops, and you will likely have to travel with your luggage right next to you, often while standing. If you choose to take the bus, do not forget to validate your ticket immediately upon boarding.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the sales points within the Arrivals terminal. The bus stop is located in the square directly in front of the terminal.
Bus + Train
There is no direct train connection from the airport to Rome. Instead, Atral buses provide a link to the Ciampino railway station, where you can catch a train to Termini Station.
The bus ride from the airport to the Ciampino station takes about 10 minutes, in addition to the train travel time to Termini. You can purchase a single, integrated bus+train ticket through the Ciampino Airlink service. Tickets are available at sales points within the airport. The price of a bus+train ticket between Ciampino Airport and Termini is €2.7, with free travel for children under 4.
Bus + Metro
Atral buses also provide a link between Ciampino Airport and the Anagnina metro station (Line A), where you can continue your journey into the city via the underground.
The bus ride to Anagnina takes approximately 20 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs €1.2.
Alternatively, ATAC buses (Rome's main public transport operator) connect Ciampino Airport to the following metro stations:
- Laurentina - metro line B (bus 720)
- Cinecitta - metro line A (bus 520)
- Subaugusta - metro line A (bus 520)
The price for a standard ticket is €1.50. This ticket is valid for 100 minutes from the first validation and can be used for the bus ride as well as one subsequent trip on the metro.
3. Taxi
The taxi stand is also located in the square directly in front of the airport terminal. Fares are fixed and regulated by the Rome City Council.
A taxi journey from Ciampino to central Rome (anywhere within the Aurelian Walls) costs €40 per car. The trip typically takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
4. Private Transfers
A private transfer is the most comfortable (but also the most expensive) way to get from Ciampino Airport directly to your hotel in Rome.
You can check the various private transfer options offered by KiwiTaxi to compare prices and vehicle types.
5. Car Rental
If you are staying in Rome for a longer period and plan to visit several attractions outside the city, renting a car can be a convenient option.
