What Not to Do in Venice

When you are on a city break in Venice, it is good to know that there are certain rules you must follow. These are specified in the Urban Police and Security Regulation, and violating them is punishable by fines of up to €500. Perhaps some of them seem absurd to you, but unfortunately, there are always tourists who break them.

Here is what NOT to do in Venice:

  1. Do not litter.
  2. Do not feed the pigeons in St. Mark's Square and do not buy seeds to feed them from various vendors.
  3. Do not walk around the city topless or in a swimsuit. Venice is not a seaside resort. If you want to go the beach, go to Lido di Venezia or Pellestrina, two of the Venetian lagoon islands, or to the mainland, in the Lido di Jesolo area.
  4. Do not picnic in Venice - do not bring food and drinks to consume on steps or in the squares. If you want a snack, we recommend stopping at one of the many cicchetteria or bàcaro style bars (see also the article about food in Venice).
  5. Do not swim in the canals. Considering that transport in Venice relies on water buses (vaporetti), gondolas, and other boats, you are putting your life in danger.
  6. Do not ride bicycles (or even walk alongside them) or use other means of transport (see also our tips for traveling in Venice). This is allowed only in a very small section, near the train station.
  7. Do not get on or off the means of transport when it is in motion.
  8. Do not travel on public transport without a valid ticket or pass. Validate them every time you board!

  9. Do not buy counterfeit goods from street vendors. In this case, the law imposes for fines even for the buyer, as well as the confiscation of the purchased products.
  10. Do not lie down on the ground in public spaces.
  11. Do not undress in public places.
