How to Get from Pisa to Florence?

Pisa is a very good starting point for exploring Florence and the whole of Tuscany. Transportation from Pisa to Florence (in Italian Firenze) or vice versa can be done quickly and easily, by train or bus, giving you the opportunity to explore these cities using local public transport.

How Far is Pisa from Florence?

The road distance between Pisa and Florence is about 90 km, which you will cover by car or bus in approximately 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. By train, you can travel this distance (between Pisa Central Station and Santa Maria Novella station in Florence) in even less time.

How to Get from Pisa Airport to Florence?

Pisa Airport is located in the San Giusto area, just 1 km from Pisa Central station (Stazione Centrale) and about 3 km from the city center. The airport handles a higher volume of passenger traffic than the one in Florence and is named after the scientist Galileo Galilei, who was born in Pisa.

Transportation from Pisa Airport to Florence can be done by train, shuttle bus, private transfer, taxi, or rental car.

Train

To get from Pisa airport to Florence by train, you will first need to take the Pisa Mover from the airport to Pisa Central Station (Stazione Centrale), and from there, catch a train to Florence.

Pisa Mover is a driverless shuttle train, similar to those used for transport in Venice or the one connecting Bologna Airport to the city center. As soon as you exit the airport, you will see directional arrows to guide you to it. Pisa Mover operates every day between 6:00 AM and 12:00 AM (from June 1st to September 30th, it operates until 1:00 AM), with a frequency ranging between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on the time of the day (trains are more frequent between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM).

The trip takes about 5 minutes, with only one intermediate stop at the San Giusto/Aurelia parking area.

The price of a ticket is €6.5 one way, or €13 round-trip. Tickets are valid for 30 days from the date of issue (for a single use within that period).

Children under 1 meter tall travel for free when accompanied by a paying adult (limited to one free child per adult). Children over 1 meter must pay full fare.

Pisa Mover tickets can be purchased online (the specific time you select doesn't matter, as you can use the ticket within 30 days), from the ticket counters in the Aurelia parking area (during their operating hours), or from ticket machines (where you can buy a maximum of 10 tickets at a time) located at the airport, the parking area, and Pisa Central Station. You can also purchase Pisa Mover tickets from Trenitalia machines in combination with train tickets; however, in this case, the 30-day validity period no longer applies.

To enter the station, you must scan the QR code from your physical ticket or the digital code received on your phone for online bookings (place the phone with the code facing up).

The Pisa Mover will drop you off directly at Pisa Central Station (Stazione Centrale), where you will need to catch a train to Florence (see details below).

Shuttle Bus

Flibco

To get from Pisa Airport to Florence, you can also use the shuttle bus services provided by Flibco, which operates in collaboration with Caronna Tour. Depending on the number of passengers, the transfer may be carried out by minibus.

Tickets start from €14.99 per person, one way (prices are higher for night departures).The price for children aged between 2 and 11 is €8.99.

 

During the day, the buses stop in Florence at the T2 Guidoni tram station (where you can catch a tram to the main train station). At night (between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM), the buses stop directly in the square in front of the Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence. The journey takes approximately 1 hour, depending on traffic, which can be quite heavy.

Tickets can be purchased online or from the Information Desk in the arrivals terminal. The bus station is located in the small square right in front of the terminal.

Bus4Fly

Another transport option is the Bus4Fly buses, which depart from Pisa Airport and stop at Piazzale Montelungo, near the Santa Maria Novella railway station in Florence. Fares are dynamic and vary depending on the reserved time slot and demand. 

Private Transfer

A private transfer from Pisa to Florence is quite expensive if booked for only 2 or 3 people. However, if you are traveling in a group, the price per person decreases. While it will still be higher than public transport (for example, a group of 8 people will pay around €50 per person), you will be dropped off directly at your hotel in Florence, offering much higher levels of comfort.

Taxi

Similar to a private transfer, taking a taxi is also quite expensive. To travel from Pisa to Florence by taxi, you can expect to pay around €200.

The Rent-a-Car terminal is located about 500m away from the airport. You can reach it either on foot (in a maximum of 10 minutes) or by using a shuttle that runs every 20 minutes.

How to Get from Pisa Centrale Train Station to Florence?

Pisa Central Station (Stazione Centrale) is the main railway station in Pisa. There is also another station called San Rossore (located closer to the Leaning Tower), but even if you catch a train from San Rossore to Florence, you will still pass through the Central Station.

Generally, there is a train from Pisa Centrale to Florence (Firenze Santa Maria Novella station) every 20-30 minutes. The journey duration varies between 50 minutes and 1 hour 20 minutes, and the price for a ticket is between €9 and €10 (with the exception of Frecciargento trains, where a ticket costs approximately €20).
