Pré-Saint-Didier - Spa and Thermal Baths in Aosta Valley
Pré-Saint-Didier is a small village in the Aosta Valley region, renowned for its thermal baths. It is located in the upper part of the valley (an area known as Valdigne), at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters, near the resorts of Courmayeur and La Thuile.
How to Get to Pré-Saint-Didier?
Pré-Saint-Didier is located at about 30 km from the city of Aosta, the regional capital, and 22 km from the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which connects Italy to France, reaching Chamonix.
If you haven't rented a car, you will need to take a local bus from Aosta (you can reach Aosta by other buses or by train, depending on your starting point). You can find more information in the article How to Get to Aosta Valley.
Arriva buses, which connect Courmayeur to La Thuile during the winter season, also stop in Pré-Saint-Didier and are free of charge.
What to Do in Pré-Saint-Didier?
Pré-Saint-Didier is a tiny village that includes the hamlets (frazioni) of Champex, Palleusieux, and Verrand (towards Courmayeur), as well as Torrent, Elévaz, La Balme, and Revers (towards La Thuile).
According to legend, the village's name comes from St. Didier, a priest who fled Lyon in the year 202 due to the persecution of Christians. Having arrived in these parts, he used to pray on the plateau above the village. This is said to be the origin of the name Pré-Saint-Didier, which translates to "St. Didier’s Meadow".

The road heading up toward La Thuile passes right through the center of the village. To its left lies the main square (where you will also find a tourist information office), while on the opposite side stands the Church of San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence).

The Church of San Lorenzo was built in the 11th or 12th century. The Romanesque bell tower, renovated in the late '80s, has maintained its beautiful medieval appearance and is considered the oldest in the Aosta Valley.

The church was first rebuilt in the 15th century and then again in 1891, when it took on its current appearance. Above the church entrance is a wooden statue of St. Lawrence. Inside, the main altar, made of gilded wood, dates back to the 18th century.

Every year, on August 10th, the Feast of St. Lawrence is organized in the central square. Also in August, the Creativa handicraft fair takes place, featuring exclusively items handmade by women.
During World War II, underground tunnels were excavated within the village limits. Today, they are used for aging the local fontina cheese (learn more in the article about the food of Aosta Valley).
The main attraction in Pré-Saint-Didier is the thermal baths (which you can read about below).
During the summer, you can enjoy hiking, cycling, rafting, or paragliding (you can contact Totem Adventure, which is based in the village). Fishing enthusiasts have access to a "no-kill" reserve where releasing the catch is mandatory (the fishing season runs from late March to mid-October).
In the winter, you can go skiing, as the resorts of La Thuile and Courmayeur are located very close to Pré-Saint-Didier, and the buses to reach them are free.
The most important point of interest in Pré-Saint-Didier (after the thermal baths) is the gorge (Orrido di Pré-Saint-Didier or Orrido di Verney) carved by the Dora di Verney River, which you can admire from a semicircular panoramic footbridge. The metal bridge was built in 2014 and is suspended 160 m above the valley. It offers a beautiful view of the waterfall, the houses in the valley, and the Mont Blanc massif.
Note: The base of the footbridge is a metal grate, so you can see the abyss directly beneath you, which may be challenging for people who have a fear of heights.

You can reach the footbridge either via a short mountain trail or by car.
Those who wish to hike can follow the well-marked trail that starts in the village, right in front of the Terme di Pré-Saint-Didier spa complex. Following the path for about 200 m, you will reach an old stone bridge flanked by an abandoned mountain building.

After crossing the river, the trail begins to climb steeply above the gorge for more than 1 kilometer. The elevation gain is 180 m, and the time needed to reach the footbridge is about 40 minutes. Hiking clothes and footwear are required.

To reach it by car, drive from Pré-Saint-Didier toward La Thuile (you can also follow the signs for the Mont Blanc Adventure Park). After passing the serpentines and driving 300 m past the tunnel, you will find a parking lot on the right (the drive takes no more than 10 minutes). Continuing in that direction for another 100m, there is a second parking lot. From there, a forest path leads you to the panoramic footbridge in about 5 minutes.
Near the footbridge, you will find a zip line and the Mont Blanc Adventure Park.
Access to the panoramic footbridge is free. For safety reasons, both the mountain trail and the footbridge are closed during the cold season when there is ice and snow, as well as on stormy days during the summer.
The Thermal Baths of Pré-Saint-Didier
The thermal springs of Pré-Saint-Didier have been known since Roman times, but their exploitation only began in the first half of the 17th century. The warm waters gush out from a grotto located at the base of the Orrido waterfall, near the starting point of the trail to the panoramic footbridge.
The first spa complex was built in 1834, when the village added the words les Bains ("The Baths") to its name. Later, in 1888, the casino building was constructed.

Following the golden age when the thermal baths were frequently visited by the Savoy royal family, the complex endured 30 years of neglect and abandonment.
In the 2000s, the facility was renovated - preserving its period style - and reopened, once again becoming the village's main attraction. Today, it offers swimming pools, saunas, Turkish baths, whirlpools, invigorating waterfalls, salt rooms, Kneipp circuits, Vichy showers, and panoramic relaxation areas, along with massages, spa treatments, and wellness programs.
Even during the winter, amidst the cold or falling snow, you can relax in the complex's garden while enjoying views of the surrounding mountains. Outside, you'll find three thermal pools and glass-walled saunas. The thermal baths are a welcome indulgence for a rest day away from the ski slopes.
The spa complex is named QC Terme Pré Saint Didier. Reservations are recommended, and access for pregnant women and children under 14 is not permitted. Don't forget to pack your swimsuit!

Where to Stay in Pré-Saint-Didier?
Pré-Saint-Didier is a small village, so it does not have many accommodation options. The few hotels and apartments available are scattered throughout the area between the center and the nearby hamlets.
Located very close to the thermal baths, you will find the apartments La mansarda delle marmotte, La Maisonnette, and Lo Scoiattolo.
Right in the center are Le Refuge du Coeur, Maison Clocher, and Locanda Bellevue.
At the entrance to the village from the national road, you'll find Hotel Edelweiss (a good 2-star hotel) and the Gentiana and Mirtillo apartments.
Another hotel belonging to the chain that manages the thermal baths is QC Termemontebianco. It is a luxury hotel located in Palleusieux, 2 km from Pré-Saint-Didier, and it also features its own SPA center.
If you are looking for apartment accommodations, you can also take a look at the Vrbo website.
