Where to Stay in Milan?

Where to Stay in Milan?

In Milan, you can find many accommodation options in all neighborhoods of the city - from more luxurious or cheaper hotels to hostels, apartments, and campsites. Often, it's not easy to choose, especially if it's your first time here. When booking your accommodation, check whether the city tax is included or not (also see the article with travel recommendations for Milan).

Accommodation in the Historic Center

Staying in the historic center of Milan is the most comfortable option but surely not the cheapest. If you don't have budget constraints, the center is clearly the best area to stay, especially if you are on a city break for just a few days. The most important tourist attractions in Milan will be within walking distance - you'll have the Duomo, the Royal Palace, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the Leonardo3 Museum, and Museo del Novecento (among the most appreciated museums in Milan) at your fingertips, as well as the Scala Theater and the famous Quadrilatero della Moda shopping district, along with the Brera Art Gallery, Sforza Castle, and Sempione Park. Many of the city's historic bars and restaurants (see also the article on what to eat in Milan) are also located in the historic center.

We have stayed several times at Hotel Brunelleschi, which we recommend. It is located on one of the streets near Piazza del Duomo. It's a 4-star hotel with a very classic atmosphere, in the style of 1980s Italy. It's not luxurious, but it has clean and comfortable rooms, good services, and a rich breakfast.

In a similar style is Hotel Galileo, also a 4-star hotel, located very close to the Duomo as well.

A well-rated 2-star hotel in the center is Hotel London, situated closer to Sforza Castle.

Accommodation near the Central Station

A cheaper option, yet still relatively close to the historic center, is staying near the Central Station (Stazione Centrale). The area itself is not very attractive, but it has many hotels. If you choose to walk, it will take about 35 minutes from the station to the Duomo. The Museum of Illusions and the Natural History Museum, located in the Indro Montanelli Gardens, are also quite close, making them suitable if you're visiting Milan with children.

Additionally, staying near the station gives you easy access to the shuttle buses that provide transfers to the three airports near Milan: Orio al Serio, Malpensa, and Linate. The station is also connected to the M2 (green) and M3 (yellow) metro lines, allowing easy access to more distant tourist attractions. Moreover, if you plan to take trips to the surrounding areas, the trains offer many direct connections to destinations near Milan.

Right next to the Central Station, you can find 3-star hotels such as Soperga, Albert, Folen, and Club Hotel, as well as 4-star chain hotels like Hilton Milan, Hyatt Centric Milan Centrale, iQ Hotel Milano, and Una Hotels Century Milano.

Closer to the center, between the Central Station and Piazza del Duomo, you'll find hotels like Ibis Milano Centro, Ibis Styles Milano Centro, Eurohotel, and Hotel Sanpi.

Cheap Accommodation in Milan

Generally, cheaper hotels can be found in more remote areas of the city. Choose your accommodation so that you have a public transport option very close by. Public transport in Milan works well and is integrated (you can use the same ticket for the metro, tram, and bus), so you can move relatively easily between attractions (though you will spend some time commuting). Make sure to choose a hotel located in the Mi1-Mi3 zones - beyond these zones, the ticket price increases.

On one occasion, we stayed at Hotel Siro, which is about a 25-minute walk from the entrance to the Central Station. We recommend it if you're looking for cheaper accommodation and are not too picky. The hotel is a few minutes' walk from the Pasteur metro station, has a supermarket right across the street, and several restaurants and bars nearby. A tram passes right in front of the hotel, which is both an advantage (for transportation) and a disadvantage if your room faces the street, as the walls are not very well soundproofed.

Another hotel where we stayed, which is cheaper (for its category), is iH Hotels Milano Gioia. It's a decent 4-star hotel, but it is further from the station (about a 30-minute walk) and metro stations (20-25 minutes). However, there is a bus stop about a 7-8 minute walk away.

Apartments in Milan

Apartments are not necessarily a cheaper option, but they can be convenient when accommodating more people or when you want to have a kitchen available to cook your own meals.

For more centrally located apartments, have a look at Duomo Prestige (near the Duomo), Appartamento Milano, and Brera (in the Brera district).

About a 10-minute walk from the Duomo is Suite Amedei4, and around 15-20 minutes away is the Porta 92 Romana apartment.

Near the Central Station, you can find Milano 71 Home.

Hostels in Milan

Hostels are a cheaper accommodation option, suitable for those who don't mind sleeping in shared dormitories with multiple beds and, most of the time, shared bathrooms in the hallway. These are an ideal alternative if you want to socialize and meet travelers from around the world.

In the city center, you can find hostels like Ostello Bello Milano Duomo and Easy Room Italy Balcony (15 minutes from the Duomo).

Near Porta Venezia is Ostelzzz, close to Casa Boschi Di Stefano (one of the museums you can visit for free in Milan).

In the Central Station area, there are Ostello Bello Milano Centrale, Grand Hostel Coconut, and Milano Ostello, while in the Navigli district, you can find Combo Milano.

Campsites in Milan

In Milan, there is only one campsite, located near the Acquatica water park. It's called Camping Village Città di Milano, and you can stay in tents, caravans, or bungalows.

A stopover area for caravans and motorhomes is Area Sosta Milano Navigli, from where you can take the tram to the city center. Another one, in a more remote area is Area Camper New Park.

Another campsite in the Lombardy region, closer to Lake Como and about an hour away from Milan, is Camping Montorfano, which offers tent, caravan, and motorhome spaces, as well as bungalows and mobile homes.

Use the CIAO5 code before completing your reservation on Tiqets and you will have a 5% discount.
